The Alfredo D. and Luz Maria P. Gutierrez Fellowship is awarded to an outstanding, full-time graduate student whose research is focused on Latin America. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and promise of research contributions.
Awards are made on an annual basis. Fellowships include a stipend and tuition scholarship for the academic year for which the award is made. The recipient is not permitted to be employed at the University or elsewhere during the period of the fellowship.
Eligibility
The Gutierrez Fellowship will be awarded to a graduate students entering year one or two of a doctoral program in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, including but not limited to anthropology, economics, Hispanic languages and literatures, history, political science, or sociology, whose research is focused on Latin America. Due to the structure of the PhD program in economics, students entering years three or four and who have exceptionally promising proposal may also apply for a Gutierrez Fellowship.
Application Process
The applicant is requested to submit an application form and all supporting materials to the appropriate departmental Director of Graduate Studies. Application forms are available from the Department Graduate Administrator and are due in mid January. Departments may fill out an application on a new student’s behalf, if necessary.
Supporting documentation includes:
- Three letters of recommendation consisting of one from the adviser or prospective advisor
- A proposal of no more than three pages double spaced
- A copy of their academic record at the University of Pittsburgh (continuing students) or copies of transcripts from all previous academic work (new students)
- No more than a two-page curriculum vitae
The application package will be reviewed by the Director of Graduate Studies, who will forward the application to the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences Graduate Studies Selection Committee. Departments can submit no more than three nominees.
Awards are announced in early March.
